The sixth instalment in the Final Destination franchise is here and its just as hilariously gory as we expected.
It’s been 14 years since the last instalment, Final Destination 5, which ended in a way that wrapped up the entire film series, so it’s no surprise fans of the films were shocked when another instalment was on the way.
The sixth instalment leans into the already absurd premise and gruesome thrills that have defined the Final Destination franchise for over 25 years. Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B Stein know how to make everyday moments turn deadly and the most mundane objects feel ominous.
The film follows college student Stefanie as she has recurring nightmares about a relative’s death and heads home to track them down and save her family from the horror that inevitably awaits them all.
We will never be able to look at tanning beds or laser eye surgery the same and Final destination bloodlines gave us a selection of comical deaths. The most entertaining deaths ranging from lawn tools to an MRI machine with every scene nodding to nostalgic moments from the previous entries. Buses, ceiling fans, and even those infamous logs make an appearance.
But what is it about this franchise that never gets old?
“In death, there are no accidents, no coincidences, no mishaps, and no escapes.”
These are the words of all-knowing mortician William Bludworth, played by the late Tony Todd, in the first Final Destination (2000). He made an emotional return to Final destination bloodlines with it being his final film appearance. He gave an improvised monologue, suggesting we make the most with what little time we have left. His consistency across the series is something fans fell in love with and a reason to keep coming back.
Every Final Destination film connects in some way, be it big or small. Whether it’s one character cheating death because another character, in a separate film, took the last cinema ticket or finding out Final Destination 5 was actually a prequel to the original. This is what makes the films so fun, trying to make connections adds another element to the viewing experience.
Lia Oldfield, Horror film fanatic, said: “I’m really glad they decided to make another one. They just don’t get old, i honestly think the deaths just get funnier and funnier.”
“I think they are popular because of the shock factor, but also because the series has been around for so long watching the older ones now they are really nostalgic. They remind me of my older siblings forcing me to watch them and us all spending time together.”
“Despite all the gore, they are really fun films and i honestly hope they make more.”
Whenever a film franchise returns after a long hiatus, there’s always reason for concern—but Final Destination: Bloodlines proves there’s still life (and death) left in the series. As sharp and darkly funny as ever, the film reminds us why the franchise has endured: its inventive premise and endlessly creative kills. Bloodlines not only honours that legacy but also hints at how much more there is to explore, should the series continue.
