Ncuti Gatwa has bid farewell to his role as the 15th Doctor, saying goodbye to the TARDIS 18 months after joining the show.
In his usual fashion, The Doctor has appeared to regenerate, but in a surprise twist, this time he’s transformed into his former companion Rose Tyler.
In the episode the Doctor regenerated after making the sacrifice to save the life of a little girl.
Rose Tyler is an old companion to the ninth and tenth Doctors, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, who is played by actor Billie Piper.
It’s unclear whether Billie Piper will be playing the 16th Doctor with the credits at the end of the finale only adding to the confusion. The programme ended saying: “Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. And introducing Billie Piper”.
This neither confirms or denies whether Billie Piper will be taking over the role, or what the future of Doctor Who could look like.
Ncuti Gatwa said in a statement on Instagram; “This journey has been one that I will never forget, and a role that will be part of me forever.”
“There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted in this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe.”
“I’ll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor.”
So what happens next….?
The future is uncertain; Disney+ produced and aired the show’s last two seasons internationally, but it will probably take some time for the BBC and Disney to decide whether to continue doing so.
It is likely that we will have to wait until 2027 to discover whether Rose Tyler is really back as the 16th Doctor. “A rose is a rose is a rose.” – Billie Piper
